The short answer to your question would be that we Americans simply could not bear to call it "Economy", (which of course it is, and you folks do), as it is somehow seemingly always unfashionable to use this term in a land where the streets are paved with gold! So marketing folks dubbed it "Coach" so one might be as comfy as a baby travelling in a traditional coach! </font>
Just received tix LHR-AMS booked on AA.com (thanks to advice from other FT posters that clued me into the savings.)
According to the official itinerary, I am flying on BA 430 LHR-AMS in COACH, but on the return BA 443 AMS-LHR I am being switched over to ECONOMY.
Go figure.
