Is Visa/MC coverage good enough in Mexico. I've been told if you don't have "Mexican ins." and you're in any kind of accident, they can hold you in jail until they determine who is at fault. Any truth to that? What do the rest of you do if renting there on personal time. Thanks!
Our situation was a bit different, in which we rented from SD and didn't read the print on the contract that the rental car was not to be driven across the border. So of course we get pulled over in Tijuana for running a yellow (although there were about 4 cars behind us doing the same). The cops were going to take us to the station for running the light AND for not mexico insurance. Talk about scary scary situation. We were begging and pleading, to no avail (esp since they couldn't really understand us). Finally, they agreed to accept something in return (aka bribe), so they took us to an alley. We only had $25!!!! They saw it, & told us they would just take us to the station. I was begging more, told them we would just turn around and leave. They finally took the $, I was so grateful, & vowed to never drive to Mexico again!
So a word to the wise, make sure you are insured!!! They are very corrupt and you really don't want to get into anything with them.
