This booking was made through an online agent that has a reputation for being a nightmare to deal with (I know should have checked before I booked) and are based in Turkey.
Can you tell us the first three digits of your ticket - are they 125?

Broadly if a flight is cancelled then the other flights on the same PNR can also be cancelled for a full refund. But you seem to be in a uniquely difficult place, when you make bookings with TA's like that, some rubbish comes with the territory. Amex insurance, if UK based, will probably be OK, given the FCO's advice. After you have extracted as much as you can from the TA, you should then calmly send a form into to Amex with your claim specifics.
