One way ticket to HKG & Immigration question

Does anyone know if I, a British passport holder booked a one way ticket to Hong Kong will be cleared by Immigration? My mate was saying that apparently they do not immigration clear visitors with one way ticket on a visitor visa (which allows me to stay upto 6 months). My plan is basically to apply for jobs there while I am on my tourist visa, then apply for a working visa, and to activate that, I will then goto Macau and re-enter.

Just thinking if I can't and need to book a return ticket, what happens if I don't use the return leg as I would likely have a working visa then and no desire to return ? Can I cancel the return leg ?
