If you do anything in your own time which causes or could cause significant damage to your employer's business, then they can and will sack you for gross misconduct. People are frequently sacked for posting things on social media, in their own time. This is not to do with your employer having to approve something or not approve it and not to do with employment contracts. It's about the fundamental relationship between employer and employee where you are required to be loyal to each other.
