There is a small hawker centre next to Esplanade Mall near Marina Bay - Makansutra Gluttons Bay - a bit more expensive, but at least didnt see any cockroaches on tables there as I saw in Lau Pa Sat.
Regarding taxis, download Grab app, cheap and fast (unless in Sentosa)
