Rebooking Lap Infant after they turn 2

Have a situation I’d never think I’d come across, but then again, I think a lot of what's gone on recently might not have been imagined by most of us.

I have two reservations for later this month, and with the virus, etc., we need to cancel 1 for sure, and the other, I’m pretty certain we will. During both these trips, it’s for the family - 2 adults, one child with a seat, and a lap infant. One is domestic, so lap infant is just added on the record, but no ticket, and the other is to the Caribbean, so she has a ticket, and paid the 10% + tax, but doesn’t have her own seat.

Lap infant turns 2 in April, and quite likely, we won’t be re-booking either before her second birthday. I’d obviously like to keep us all on one PNR when we do rebook, but when we rebook using existing funds, we presumably can’t add the additional child on the record - is that correct?

For domestic, I was told by an agent that we’d need to book the infant separately, and they’d ’notate’ it - but I know that probably doesn’t mean much (concerned about IRROPS, etc. - upgrades are an afterthought, but in the end, on a 1000 mile itinerary, I don’t really care).

For the itinerary to the Caribbean, an agent said that the infant ticket was different than a ticket for someone with a seat, and so wouldn’t be kept on the PNR if we canceled - that the ticket would just be refunded, and again, we’d need to book her on a separate PNR when using it for all of us in the future.

Any ideas on if both of these correct, and if there is anything I can do to try and get us together while using the credit. I’m really uncomfortable if we need to travel with our infant on a separate PNR, not to mention not even be sure UA would book it, and if they did, not sure how much of a PITA it would be with check in, etc. I'd be open to taking an ETC vs. using the PNR to rebook, but I doubt UA would do that.
