On my two most recent flights, one AA and one UA, I ended up standing in the rear galley waiting for a lav and in both cases the FAs were pleasant and the AA FAs even offered me snacks and water while I waited.

I have seen the no hanging out in the galley rule enforced many times when it's been the forward galley near the flight deck, but never in a middle or rear galley.
