any idea then, if a domestic ticket will be given for a stopover ?
i.e. I am flying from boston to bombay via
heathrow via business using my BA miles.
I want to take a stopover and travel
LHR-MAN-LHR for 2 days to visit a friend.

so will BA allow that ? or do i have to spend an additrional 10k miles for that RT ?

I don't think BA will book me BOS-BOM via MAN for the award travel, right ? ;-)

According to the 2002 handbook:
TERM AND CONDITIONS

40. Routings for award bookings are based on the most direct route between the origin and destination applicable to the carrier(s) involved.

41. A stopover is permitted in each direction at one connecting point on British Airways and British Airways joint awards round trip travel awards. If more than one stopover is requested, a higher mileage level will be charged.

Considering that Manchester is not on the most direct routing between Boston and Bombay and it is neither a connecting point, a stopover is not allowed by rules. However, with a friendly agent and a very polite approach, it is not outrageous to expect it. You can pull it off.
