No hotel should be surprising guests with the fee. Before I booked at The Plaza, I was well aware of the fee and what it provides. It was also explained upon check-in. And if you go to Fairmont.com and go to the webpage for The Plaza, the Destination Fee is the first item listed under 'Guest Services'. They don't appear to be trying to hide it. But, it's still annoying. And while I've stayed at a lot of hotels that had similar fees, I can't say I've ever stayed at one where it wasn't made known to me in advance.
I also see that they've raised the fee to USD$60/day for this year, according to the website.
