Free domestic flight for award booking - is this normal

I made an award booking to Hong Kong for a trip in October and was pleasantly surprised to be given a free EDI-LHR-EDI connection.

I had assumed the connection would have to be within the mileage limit of the award but it seems not.

LHR-HKG is a Zone 6 route (8001-12400 mile return trips) with an actual distance of 11940

LHR-EDI is an additional 660 miles therefore the complete trip is 12600.

I thought I was going to have to purchase add on flights (as a Zone 7 return would have been an extra 60000 miles in Club) so have saved about £80 each which should cover a few nice meals in Hong Kong! Very happy

Is this normal practice or was I just lucky?

Second point......

Club class availability in September and October seems to have all but disappeared over the last few days from about 70% days to only a few days each month. Any particular reason?
