They CAN open space if you’re rescheduling because of a canceled flight (I had it done for me). But the phone reps have to waitlist you and submit a request, and it then gets done within 24 hours. And you probably will have to fight for it, they can be resistant to do it. But it definitely can be done (and I have no status at all).
