I had this exact situation last year when I flew from ORD-FRA on to Mumbai. I tried to get on the upgrade list in ORD for the FRA-Mumbain segment because it was same day in Germany, but this didn't work. So I had to be added to the upgrade list in FRA. Luckily it worked out for me.
