In the past (e.g. in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crash) aircraft have been stored. In that case some of the first 747-400s to be retired went to the California desert. When things picked up some came back into service, but others never did.
I'd also hope that BA/IAG has accumulated enough data over the years to be able to model this, but I'd expect any business like this to err on the side of caution.
Still impossible to predict how things will pan out - this is different from previous situations and quite unprecedented.
