What location are you in where they demand to see the card? I've had pretty good luck with Publix supermarkets in Florida. They never ask to see the card.
As with all MS its YMMV. I find the MIA/FLL and Gold Coast area much harder than further north and west coast of FL. Many who never asked to see cards are now asking.
