Quick review after a 7-night stay
Time flies indeed. Sad to see 6 nights have been already removed from my 7-night stay here.
As I got a lot of info from this thread so I am also posting a quick review of my experience.
THE QUESTION- Conrad vs WA?
There should be no answer to this controversial question in this thread- they are just different resorts while the only clear fact is WA is more expensive than Conrad.
But after spending 6 nights split into 3 at BV and the other 3 at WV here, my wife and I have decided to come back here again- our personal view! For reference, we had a 6-night stay at Conrad last year also in late Feb- we enjoyed our SWV a lot.
My biggest concern before this stay was lack of marine life around the reef per some reviews in this thread. However I really enjoyed snorkeling around the reef near 700s villa area and the dive pier- much better than I expected although they cannot beat Conrad's house reef. I am a big fan of snorkeling when I come to Maldives... I spend nearly 3-4 hours per day for this activity.
And my wife loved WA's upscale villa with a large private pool while SWV at Conrad only had a small outdoor bathtub. This said, a great sunset view from SWV at Conrad is a big edge not available in most of villas at WA.
Last but not least, buggy service is great here. Except one or two times, we didn't wait more than 5 mins for our buggy to arrive. This was not the case at Conrad.
To summarise OUR experience at both properties,
WA- nicer villa hardware including a large private pool, direct access from the villa (not all though) to fairly good marine life, prompt buggy service
Conrad- amazing and unobstructed sunset view at SWV, unbeatable marine life of the house reef, more affordable prices + better adult-only pool (the quiet zone)
Villa selection?
Beach villa- Our villa was 200s facing southwest as per our preference sent over before the arrival so we felt very lucky. Our villa 205 was at the corner so we enjoyed good privacy. But vegetation near the beach entrance and the neighbor villa needs to grow much more for better privacy. Plus we could enjoy a nice sunset view at our beach area which also had soft sand. Be aware that some villas in 200s facing southwest have quite crude or even rocky sand area in their beach so that you cannot go barefoot before taking a dip into the beach. For snorkeling I recommend you swim toward a 3-bedroom villa (201) to enjoy relatively rich marine life. Beach around this area is also pretty calm so you feel comfortable while snorkeling as well.
If I come back here later, then I will choose this area again for a combo of fair privacy and a sunset view. But if you care more about snorkeling then I would recommend 600s facing south for better marine life.
Water villa- We are now in a 700s villa facing north. Before moving our villa, I specifically asked for a certain villa but initially it was not available. Instead the resort assigned a GWV to us initially, which was a pleasant surprise. But later guests at our desired villa checked out so we could move to this current villa 737, at the end of 700s side. Yes, we gave up the GWV but we had no remorse at all. Excellent privacy is the best advantage of this villa- I was mostly without clothes and able not to offend anyone. And on the deck, you can enjoy sunrise as the villa faces north-east. Marine life around the villa is greater than that around 200s facing south- lots of live corals, schools of jacks, snappers etc. Luckily I encountered sharks and turtles a couple of times although they are not common. Again Conrad's house reef is still much better but we love to a direct access from our villa to the reef here. Lagoon is narrow indeed but this is actually an advantage in case of reef snorkeling in my opinion.
However 700s facing north is indeed windy especially at night. So some people might want to avoid this section and feel lagoon/reef around this area is too wavy for snorkeling. But although we are not good swimmers, my wife and I so far did not see much problem in enjoying snorkeling over past 3 days. Moreover someone would not like slightly obstructing lights in the distance on the horizon from other islands.
Unless someone posts a great review of marine life around 100s WV area, I will choose 700s side again- this is usual recommendation from the staffs at the dive centre here. (700s over 100s for snorkeling).
But if you prefer more secluded and calm atmosphere then I guess 100s would be a good choice.
Hope this help!
I will try to post another review for snorkeling experience.
