However in terms of total capacity the 7M8 is indeed for replacing 320 plus some extras for expansions. Similarly neither 333 nor 767 is comparable to 7M8, but they do show up on NA chunk routes previously operated, or planned to be operated, by 7M8s. The 330s are indeed planned for future expansion, but if the 7M8s are still flying, AC would have many other options for expansion than purchasing A330s.
I really don't understand your reply. The A330 purchase is part of AC's long term strategy for transatlantic expansion, with the 787 fleet positioned for longer routes across the Pacific. It is the ideal platform for YYZ/YUL to Europe with a low CapEx. It replaces the 767's which are being retired and allows for some expansion on some routes. Placing it on YOW-LHR this summer is likely because the route can support the extra seats. The 787 options were not taken up as the CapEx is higher and expansion and fleet replacement is better managed by A330's presently being added.
The 7M8 and A220 will ultimately replace the A32x fleet with the exception of the A321, which will continue to serve the higher volume transcon routes in addition to select wide body service on the routes that can support it (YVR/YYC-YYZ/YUL). The A330 purchase has nothing to do with the Max grounding. The only exception would be putting them into service in Singapore airlines configuration instead of refurbishing them prior to entry into service. The Max (and maybe the A220) will serve transatlantic on thinner routes from YHZ/YYT and YUL as was previously planned. The Max grounding has been largely covered by delaying retirements and lease returns and by employing Rouge aircraft on mainline routes during the winter season (especially Rouge 767's).
There is no way AC would purchase 9 A330's to cover the grounding of a narrow body aircraft. What would they do with them once the grounding was up?
