My wife and kids are dual nationals, so have both passport stored and we can select the right one for our trip. O am not surprised that it does not accept two of the same country... As only one can be valid at any time.
I have a China.visa stored, which is like a second passport, that comes up automatically... so, kudos to UA it.
It is perfectly legal to have two valid and unexpired passports. the US state department will routinely issue a 2nd passport to frequent travelers (it is only valid for 4 years). Many people at my company have 2 (or more if they have dual citizenships). Also government employees typically utilize an official passport for official business travel.
Did not know about the visa storage - I have a 10 year China visa as well but have never seen it appear as an option. Then again I haven't visited China for a while, and don't have any current plans to do so ...
