Exactly. And there are stories of such exceptions. One person in my Cruise Critic roll call got a credit, and someone here got a refund.
The real issue as I see it is that this isn't a one-off situation when I have a unique problem (although my exact situation is probably different than others). Other airlines are making exceptions to their fare rules and offering refunds when they would not normally do so.
