I rented a car through Avis in early January of this year. The location was in a mall and had one employee who gave me the keys and told me where the car was. She did not do any type of inspection or walkthrough with me.
I noticed that the windshield was cracked when I drove off in the car. Unfortunately, I was in a hurry and did not have time to go back inside and wait in line to report the crack.
And at that point you needed to go back and get the damage documented. Period.
Now you will spend more time dealing with this mess. Or figure your "time" was worth more than $200 and just pay them the $200.
If you used the right credit card this will not be an issue at all. It is no fun to pay for something that was not your fault, but that goes back to your not wanting to waste time.
Pictures alone will not help you in a fight with Avis over rental damage. Only the damage slip from the location will. Pictures may help too but you have to be careful on those when it comes to these window cracks. You may take a photo of a crack upon pick-up and then a few days later the crack spreads a little more upon return and at that point it gets real sticky with Avis when they have pictures from after you used the car with a bigger crack than you say it had.
