i've tried online, it worked. I think that the problem is on the return.
Aeroplan shows lots of option thru Guam and it's not direct, making lots of stop. I've got the same message by transiting thru Guam to HNL
however, when i change to narita to HNL (flying direct) and i select the direct flight, no problem at all combining with HNL-SFO-YYZ
157.00$, all on UA except the last flight sfo-yyz
