It's still worth seeing if you're willing to travel to a slightly cheaper place, but huge savings are hard to get these days.
There can be savings of $2-3,000 usd starting in places like Oslo, South Africa, or Japan so it is worth investigating these options. I'd avoid using BA to ticket the trip as recently I've had an itinerary on hold from the OW RTW site that was pushed to BA (first flight was BA) and no agent was able to help. A previous RTW ticket was done from a dedicated desk on American Airlines and I had no problems with changes. BA also has higher taxes and fees so I'd avoid them when possible.
