I am really surprised that members of FT are concerned about the plight of the "average punter looking for a deal". jk

Do they get extra miles? I have seen this too often now, including in google flight search results. The price is anyway too-good-to-be-true, so hopefully even the average occasional flyer would do a double check. Additionally has anyone flown this way and ended up getting an upgrade on the longer segment when they check in or after the first segment is flown?
