First, if you have insurance for this, turn it over to the insurer ASAP. Many have strict time limits and if you don't turn it over within the time limit, they won't pay. If it is turned over, just make sure that it is taken care of one way or the other.

Second, simply make a clear & concise statement of what you observed. E.g, damage to the glass at pickup. Then offer to put that in an affidavit if it helps.

Third, do not ignore this and do not simply suggest that it is for Avis to prove anything. Bottom line is that if this is not resolved, either by Avis removing the damage charge or by you (or your insurer) paying, Avis simply sticks you on its DNR list and sooner or later you need an Avis car for some reason & can't get one.

For the benefit of others and particularly when there is a self-evident defect, always take photos at pickup and drop off. You can store them in a file somewhere for years if you want.
