Actually no. Even Avis can claim whatever they want, as a matter of law, Avis has to prove you are responsible the damage in some ways. FWIW, even not the case here, the rental car could be damaged after the return but before Avis can check the car.

You may be able to seek relief from a court of law. But I won't go that far at this point.
