How is giving a bogus fare quote giving you what you asked for? It can certainly check the married segment inventory before giving you a final fare price. I should add that Google Flights actually does this for DL flights with multi-city searches, but apparently not other airlines.
If the other option ( as have seen on some carriers ) is only to give a price at the end once all flights are selected, then I would take AA's approach. It is easily avoided by searching origin-destination rather than connecting points for each part of a multi sector search
