You do get the benefit even if you do not buy the ticket with the card. It is associated with your frequent flyer number. As long as that is on the PNR you get the benefits. Other airlines, such as United, do require that you use the card.

Thanks! That's what I figured. They seem to emphasize the "primary" cardholder everywhere.
