5500 points gets you a $50 Amazon gift card. $4000 spend at 1x gets you 4000 points plus 1500 points he already has = 5500 points = $50 amazon gift card.
$4000 spend at 2% gets you $80 cash and then $80 spend at Amazon (or anywhere else) gets you an additional $4 cash back. For a total of $84 in cash rewards.
