So if your flight is full of elites, then there is a chance you get last group.

Being that you fly between hubs (NY and PHX) I would expect a plane full of elites and by the time you board, they will have started to gate check bags.
Plan accordingly.
Flew PHX/MIA yesterday (Wednesday afternoon) I was number 13 (as a mid spend PP) on a list of 25+ on the upgrade list. Boarding groups 2 and 3 was out of control. Gate check. You can track bags by the AA app.
