I might be very wrong but for groups 6-8 I always thought it might be tied to fare code. But again I might be wrong. I think if you're Group 6 or higher you should count on the real possibility of you bag not being placed near you. Personally I'd probably gate check my bigger bag. I don't think the GA will charge you even if they make an announcement of free gate check.
