If you don't have any plans to see anything on the drive up to Bar Harbor, consider flying there and renting a car there instead. It may give you more time for other activities. Cape Air (offseason) and Silver Airways (peak season) fly to Bar Harbor from Boston.
Plan is to take Route 1. Flight is also expensive right now, almost 150$ more than the 5-6 hour car drive from Boston.
