yes, I have checked-in many pax doing that same routing, or through FRA for JNB/CPT. You can through check your bag since it is not an overnight but same (long) day in LHR. They only possible hiccup is if the check-in agent asks if you will stay at LHR the whole day. The correct answer has be yes. You are not allowed to check in your bags if you are leaving the airport.
