1. Was the issue that we tried to do this at the hotel? If we had pre-booked the room through customer service, using my husband's points but putting the room in my name, would we have been entitled to the benefits of my higher status? My understanding was that the terms of the program prohibit this.

2. Is it possible to do this (and get the higher status) using a free night certificate? Again, my understanding is that the program prohibits this.

Thanks in advance.
The issue is the award certificate is supposed to match the name of the person checking in. The elite benefits of the person checking in will apply. The proper procedure is for the award certificate to be issued by customer service in the name of the member staying. This can not be done online. Credit card free night certificates are already issued in the holders name, so can not be transferred.
