BA have done this to cut down compensation claims given there's likely more economy travelers than CE ones. BA could either have put on a larger aircraft or had another one world partner fly them back - both more expensive than stealing from CE pax. They decided to emotionally blackmail CE passengers into thinking BA were doing an emergency mercy mission out of the goodness of their heart. Get real people.
I disagree. The priority is to get as many people to their destination as possible. Flying aircraft with empty middle seats does not achieve that. Changing to a bigger aircraft is likely to affect adversely the route the larger aircraft was scheduled to fly.
