In the sticky (which I did read!) it states that; on regular economy fares (not HBO) Bronze members can pre-select seats within 7 days of departure, excluding exit rows. In fact, as a Bronze member myself currently, I was able to select exit row seats both to and from Edinburgh for my trip this coming Wednesday. Perhaps BA have relaxed this rule and possibly the sticky needs updating?
I don't know which bit of the seating policy thread you saw, but I thought that the exit row restriction related to long-haul flights and this post from that thread seems to be consistent with that:-
