Spoke to a FA earlier this morning and he said it is to protect the staff. Sometimes they may come in contact with the towels and people do all kind of things with them, he said.

Anyway, as a BA frequent flyer, I have learnt to always bring wet wipes with me. Came in handy again this morning as there were chocolate (I hope) stains on the belt.
