San Francisco / SFO Moved to Terminal 1 2020 (inc. new Admirals Club)

American Airlines has been planning to move its consolidated operations to SFO’s new Harvey Milk Terminal 1 (redesigned, rebuilt South Terminal) including opening the new T-1 Admirals Club 24 March 2020. AA currently operates from three gates in Boarding Area C and five in Boarding Area D. All operations will move to T-1 Boarding Area B.

“The Oneworld Alliance carrier will move its schedule of up to 50 daily flights to the terminal when the next nine gates on Boarding Area B open around March 2020, according to a prospectus for San Francisco (SFO) airport’s next bond issue.” — (The Points Guy)

"The completed terminal will feature a new central area with improved spaces for passenger check-in, a consolidated security checkpoint, a “re-composure” area, a new common use baggage handling system and baggage claims and a new mezzanine with connections to the AirTrain and the central parking garage.

A welcome improvement will be connecting walkways located post-security that will provide easy access to International Boarding Area A and Boarding Area C." (Airways Magazine — link)

The plans include an extended, modern children's play area, as well. A connector to open in Q2 will offer access to international boarding areas and oneworld lounges.

The $2.4 billion project includes:
  • design and construction of Harvey Milk Terminal 1’s pre-security concourse
  • a new Boarding Area B (B/A B) with improved passenger circulation and access to its 25 gates, new passenger loading bridges and new concessions
  • a spacious central concourse with an art gallery, food halls showcasing the best in Bay Area fare, and integrated technology to facilitate the passenger journey
  • a new mezzanine with connections to the AirTrain, public transit and the Central Parking Garage
  • convenient new post-security corridors connecting to the International Terminal A gates and Boarding Area C.
Timeline:
  • October 2018: Public call for Harvey Milk photographs.
  • July 2019: 9 gates open in Boarding Area B; new Consolidated Security Checkpoint opens; Harvey Milk Terminal 1 Center partially opens
  • March 2020: 9 more gates open in Boarding Area B (18 gates total), entire south check-in lobby
  • Q2 2021: International Connector open, 7 additional gates (25 gates total), swing gates open
  • Q4 2023: All gates open; Boarding Area B and Harvey Milk Terminal 1 fully operational
The construction of the new Harvey Milk Terminal 1 is divided into two projects: Boarding Area B (BAB) and Harvey Milk Terminal 1 Center (T1C).

The new Admirals Club will be approximately 20% larger than the current T-2 facility, and will have two showers for Club users. There will no longer be a cozy fireplace due to the absence of gas piping, and an electric fireplace was not considered esthetically pleasing. The trees in the current facility will be relocated at the end of February. There has been no mention to date as to the soda machine in the current Club.

A lagniappe for Club users will be the gourmet chocolate shop just outside the Admirals Club entrance.

(Terminal 2 will have a new Sky Terrace deck, to open Valentine’s Day 14 Feb 2020, a boon to av geeks and a throwback to the earlier days of SFO. “Located pre-security in Terminal 2, The SkyTerrace will be open seven days a week from 7 AM – 10 PM. Access is free and no ticket or boarding pass is required, but visitors will undergo a security check as they enter the space.”)
