I've had it at a few hotels. It really pisses me off at hotels where I am retrieving the bags by 4, it's bad enough Hilton doesn't give a 4 p.m. check out to diamonds like their competition, but really iritates me to pay to have my bags held. First time I encountered it was five or six years ago at the Washington Hilton and I dinged them on my TA review. I did receive a response stating that it wasn't the hotel policy but was due to a union rule and the bell staff splits the fee and the hotel doesn't receive any of the revenue. Wish I would have know that beforehand because I tipped the bellstaff figuring the hotel was getting the money.
Now that I found out the hotel isn't receiveing the money I refuse to tip the bellstaff at hotels that charge it. I figure they are just hurting themslves. I normally only have a rollerbag and my backpack and tip $5. If theyd rather get just $1 or $2 by demanding payment instead of $5 that is fine with me. What I really hate is when the staff acts like they expect a tip after charging.
