I then, each time, went on to contact TK and was told they could make a new booking and charge me a fee to collect my payment, or I could visit their local office in a city far away from where I live.

So, as far as I'm concerned, the airline does not accept credit card payments.

Is it time for me to give up on Turkish and switch to a decent airline? Seriously, what the hell?
I don't know what's the problem but it's highly possible that your USA bank(s) are rejecting payment due to security reasons. Possibly the systems think that your intended purchases are scams. Why don't you consider booking a flight via an USA based OTA with a USA card?

I didn't have any problems booking a ticket via the TK website with a Turkish credit card.
