I always wondered if the "upgrade" was Marriott's Corp system following the normal rules. It automatically checks and sees there is availability, grabs the room and notifies you (all done without any direct interaction with someone at the hotel). Then maybe the day of arrival, someone as the hotel checks the room assignments, sees the upgraded room and downgrades us as they don't want to "give that room away."
