Not UA, but a lot of the airlines in Europe and in particular Asia didn’t ban smoking until surprisingly recently. China didn’t ban smoking until .... 2017! And they actually gave the airlines 2 years to comply, the compliance period was eliminated after some safety incidents, so effectively you were able to smoke on Chinese airlines until 2019! Crazy! (And I’m a smoker)
