Welcome to Flyertalk Blackfriars1. You can get a refund on your cancelled service, which hopefully will cover the train fare. They are a bit inconsistent on this, but in some situations they refund the train fare (but not the air fare in that situation).
thank you - I wish it had been under better circumstances!

I decided to cut my losses and book a Eurostar ticket as the website was completely inoperable (apart from a cancellation option) and it was over an hour to speak to someone. Now I’m back in London, I’m looking forward to see how long it take BA to book me on a service to get me home given tomorrow looks a no go. Hopefully it makes them pay my train ticket. Given the advanced warning of the storm, I feel BA could have been slightly more proactive. But who am I to suggest how to run an airline!
