Long time lurker-finally registered! Hooray!

Anyway, was hoping to book a USA to Asia ticket, and found a cheap T fare. Just wanted to understand how to strategize for this:
-Book the trip
-Can't choose a seat at booking, however wait until online check-in to select a seat? (going with a partner and wanted to see odds of sitting together)

Also, flying through asia, some carriers do the 'check documents' stuff when i'm abroad-will that put the kabosh for doing online check-in to get seats?

I've tried to look through the forums which mentioned some of this but just wanted to double check and ask about the document check stuff.
