Si, mi amigo upgraded last fall with RPU on CM. Confirmed in Z and showed business with both CM and UA.COM. He experienced invol downgrade at checkin. He asked for CM supe, contract agents at LAX agreed the itin was confirmed in biz but do nothing and tell him pound sand. He called CM customer service but they also did not provide anything except tell him to write the complaint. He did. So far, niente.
Also he wrote UA and they acknowledge the downgrade. There were two deductions for the upgrade, one in Nov (RPU, UG confirmed) and another deduction on the day of the flight (20 PPoints but still no UG...) and one refund (the 20PP, four days later).
So there was a downgrade, and he lost the RPU with no delivery, but when he complained again in writing they did extend his 1K status for this year but without being awarded the normal 1K qualifying PP or UG instruments. They also said the PP were lost and could not be extended, although he had specifically requested the redeposit with renewed expiration considering the RPU was locked up in a confirmed and nondelivered UG for months and then more PP were taken with no result on the day of flight, and these PP were only returned with three days prior to expiration so impossible to use. I am not sure if he preferred to remain Plat with valid PP refund or 1K and lose the PP totally.
It is disappointing that such UG instruments are trashed, more when there is an invol downgrade of this type.
