My father is having surgery and I flying back from SFO to YYZ. Of course, the office changed the date of the surgery outside the window of my trip, so I'll have to eat a change flight fee cost ($200).
I always hear you get charged the change fee + difference in new ticket price. My question is - what if the new ticket price is lower? Do you get credit/refund?

To be clear, the fare difference must be greater than change fee to get any credit back. If the new fare is $150 less and the change fee is $200, you will still have to pay $50.
