Also, if you tell UA the reason for the change, they may waive the change fee, or refund it after travel.
Thanks. I actually did call before and mentioned the situation (I didn't try to play it up) and the agent didn't offer and gave me the details of change fee cost. I just forgot to ask about the difference. She took my details and said I can call back, so perhaps I'll try again.
