If memory serves me well, Delta started the triple miles promotion - which was matched by the other airlines. Shortly afterward, came the first devaluation of the award charts to account for the fact that everyone had so many miles in their accounts. Award redemption and upgrade requirements went way up. People complained, but they were so mile rich, it was not too much of a concern. However, the airlines began to understand that they had the right to change program rules - and they have ever since.
I agree. Some time before triple miles was the reduction of domestic economy class awards from 50,000 miles to 20,000 miles. When frequent flyer programs first came out around 1981, I thought that I would never earn 50,000 miles for an award so I flew one domestic trip without getting credit. Ohhhhh!
