thanks, I totally agree with this strategy, and have used it successfully with BE tickets in the past, especially when traveling solo. you're absolutely correct that MCE seats aren't worth what they charge; unless, I suppose, you're a big drinker.
in this case, I'm traveling with mr kk and our dog, so I'm willing to pay for seats (actually I'm not paying for seats anyway, amex will take care of that as my airline benefit). I just hate the idea of paying twice, since MCE isn't available at this moment.
which brings me back to my original question: does anyone know if i pay for a preferred seat and then later want to change to a MCE seat (which wasn't available at the time of paying for the preferred) do you get your money back for the preferred seat?
