I'm not sure there's much, if any, of a service difference between P+ and E+ on the transcon route that OP booked. The biggest problem with P+ on the transcontinental flights is that it's only offered on a small subset of flights, and there aren't any partner airlines that offer service on the route to change to.

You could try asking to be pushed to AA or DL if they have a flight at about the right time, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
