Australian Domestic Luggage Size - 140cm

Hi FlyerTalk,

So I have travelled domestically in Australia many times, I am Gold with Qantas and not once have I considered the dimensions of checked luggage when traveling until now. My family from Europe is coming to Australia for my wedding in April and as part of the trip we are doing a domestic leg (different ticket & airline to their International Trip) using Qantas from Sydney to Melbourne. My father has sent me an email in a panic telling me that Qantas Domestic Checked luggage has a total size limit of 140cm, compared to 158cm for International. The bag they are bringing is 157cm which is obviously significantly bigger than the 140cm limit.

Understanding that the Qantas Domestic Check In counters are all electronic Bag Drops, do these measure size with those fancy lasers? Has anyone encountered their bag being rejected due to size?

Thanks!
